The Fisherman of Gaza

Derek Graham speaks on the atrocities happening in Gaza

Israel causing a slow genocide in Gaza

Today we are supposed to go and join the fisherman of Gaza and see how they deal with the restrictions on fishing. I politely decline knowing I'll end up being sick. We stay back and are given a talk by Derek Graham. He’s an Irishman living in Gaza with his wife. Derek Graham is a member of the Free Gaza Movement and one of the owners of the MV Rachel Corrie

Derek explains some of the desperate conditions the fisherman work in which include only being allowed to fish up to 6 miles out. According to international law they should be allowed to fish up to 20 nautical miles but the Israelis change and bend the rules frequently.

If you go outside the 6 mile radius the fisherman risk being arrested or shot. Many of the fisherman have multiple injuries. Derek describes one fisherman who has more than 5 bullet holes.

Derek’s and Jenny's work is tireless and Derek has appeared on many news channels talking about the multi faceted attacks on the people of Gaza, he has been arrested more than 3 times and is on the Israeli blacklist.

A few days later after meeting Derek a regular visitor to the hotel he puts on a video for some of the other convoy members to see. It contains graphic footage of murders. I briefly pass by and see a gut wrenching image of a man with his brains all over the table. Part of me wants to watch to see how horrific it, the other part of me refrains from watching any more and wants to vomit. He explains that one of the paramedics tried to save his friend. There are no niceties in Derek’s matter of fact approach to spreading the truth. He explains that the paramedic had to scoop up his friends brains and wrap his head in a bandage just so there was a small possibility it would be palatable enough for people to see and get some well needed media attention.

Derek makes no excuses for showing the video but is aware that this type of footage is never going to appear on mainstream news.  He talks with great passion and enthusiam. He also talks about his friend who was murdered.

Derek and Jenny's Italian friend, Vittorio (Victor) Arrigoni, was tortured and killed under strange circumstances. Derek describes his late friend: "He was a gentle giant. He had the biggest arms I had ever seen, but he wouldn't have hurt a fly. And everybody loved him, especially the women. Oh they loved him!" And he goes on with this harrowing tale. "Before he was killed, the Israelis took him while he was acting as human shield on a Palestinian fisherman's boat and they locked him up for days in a toilet that hadn't been cleaned for years. He was eaten by maggots and he had blisters all over his body when he came out."

If you would like to know more about Derek and Jenny’s work. I hope you will take time out to look at some of the videos he has done on Youtube and make a donation to help keep his working going.

Hummingbirds of Gaza

"Like the hummingbird the people of Gaza are given no choice but to adapt swiftly to ever changing situations which includes having their houses destroyed, human rights violations and dealing with trauma every single day. The Palestinian people and those in Gaza retain the true spirit of the Hummingbird by remaining joyful, compassionate and sensitive in the face of extreme adversity."
